The districts of the Brussels canal have been built with successive immigrants. Since the 90's, others arrive from Eastern Europe following the enlargement of the European Union, but also from Africa, Asia and South America, and also again from the South of Europe driven out by misery and economic crises.
The building of a very diverse international community continues. The canal districts of Brussels continue to change, they are the place of "first steps" for those who arrive in Brussels in search of a more dignified life and a possible future. For two hundred years we have built a community here that is in constant transition, with a new culture being created every day.Just as in the past for migrants from the Belgian countryside, from Eastern Europe or from the Mediterranean, the new migrants face material difficulties, housing difficulties, start families, know the gestures of solidarity of the neighbors and participate in the popular culture of the canal districts.Who are our neighbors, why did they come, what is their history, their project. How do we cooperate together? Some will try, once again, as in other migrations, to stir up ignorance of foreigners, the poor and differences in order to sow confusion and division. The adventure of the Brussels canal districts shows that the sowers of division are wrong and that cooperation is the future!
