The industrial revolution had a huge impact.Whole families worked 12 hours a day in factories.Despite this, they remained poor and without any social rights or protection. The 19th and 20th centuries were marked by determined struggles for basic rights, the right to vote, the right of association, the prohibition of child labor, social security, etc. Our neighborhoods become a hotbed of progressive political organizations. Solidarity also developed in other forms. In 1882, the first bakery cooperative in Brussels was created in Molenbeek.And it is no coincidence that the majestic building of the Social Security looks down on Brussels from the Square de l'Aviation in Cureghem. The Museum of the Resistance, located in Cureghem, where the model of FAUX SOIR was made, is certainly worth a visit. After the war, the often precarious situation of the migrant populations gave rise to the demand for the right to vote and a strong associative activity in the fields of housing, health, socio-cultural activities, school assistance,... The difficulties of the new migrants to access papers, the situations of poverty and the lack of jobs gave birth to new movements of solidarity.
